The Situation: Client is a licensed couples therapist serving Portland and Silicon Valley. Her website was actively generating clients when everything stopped.
After Google's September 2024 Helpful Content Update combined with technical debt from a June 2025 website rebuild, her online presence collapsed:
Organic traffic dropped to near zero
Only 134 of 1,784 pages were indexed
662 pages were crawled but not indexed
Inbound calls stopped
Google was finding the site but didn't trust it enough to show it.
What I Did : I implemented a focused recovery plan between November 17-27, 2025:
Deleted low-value and thin pages
Cleaned and resubmitted the sitemap
Added and corrected 301 redirects
Fixed schema markup issues
Improved canonical and indexing signals
Tightened site structure around key service and location pages
Added .htaccess rules to control pagination and duplicate pages
The Results — Within 6 Days:
Not indexed pages dropped from 662 → 537
Google began reprocessing the site favorably
Key commercial pages returned to the index
Inbound calls began returning
Organic visibility began stabilizing
Key Insight: Google didn't penalize this site for one mistake. The drop came from a combination of algorithm sensitivity and accumulated technical debt. The recovery was fast because the response was decisive — remove the clutter, clarify the structure, and give Google a cleaner site to trust.
